I always expected heavenly sword to be a sub par game... A mindless hack and slash ala dynasty warriors without the allies and powerups... But, it appears that it is far better than expected... Here are some misconceptions I had of the game before I spent some time with it...
Misconception #1 - Its all just button mashing...
Here's a shocker... It isn't... For each stage, a rating system is used... and to score a 3/3, one must dispatch of the enemies in a stylish manner (think elaborate combos) while avoiding damage via rolls and counters... Therefore rushing in ala dynasty warriors is not the way to go... If executed correctly it will ensure that the player unlocks more complex combos which not only deal more damage but also allow more elaborate combos to be stringed together.... Further, you'll find out early on that some enemies can only be taken down via specialized attacks which are executed via a mini-game-like sequence ala god of war...
Misconception #2 - There is nothing to do except hack your way through a sea of enemies...
I actually bought the game so that I could plough through horde after horde of enemies with my big ass sword, but, it appears that there is more to the game besides the "slice and dice" bits... For instance, there are sniping missions which incorporate the use of the sixaxis to apply an aftertouch to the projectiles to allow you to direct them to your target with deadly precision... There are a few interesting puzzles incorporating the sixaxis as well... Infiltration missions, etc... So its more than the average hack and slash...
Misconception #3 - The game is a waste of $$$...
I for one never expected the game to ship with so many extras... The high quality animated series available on the disc alone more than makes up for the USD 54.90 I paid for it...
