Here are a list of parts that were added to the desktop in the past 1 week…
- KIngston Hyper X DDR2 8500 4gb (2x2gb kit)
- Zalman 120mm 2000 rpm fan
- Cooler Master Hyper N520 cpu cooler
Items no. 1 and 2 were fairly incident free except for a slight hitch during installation when it became obvious that the Zalman 120mm fan couldn’t be fitted in the front of the casing like originally planned and had to be swapped with the rear exhaust fan…
Procuring and installing item no. 3 was an adventure by itself… As I was not sure what would fit the already cramped configuration (lots of heatpipes on the board and relatively small case) that I had (the super high heat spreaders for the Kingston Hyper X wasn’t helpful in this aspect) and getting a definite answer from my favourite tech forum seemed futile, upon recommendation of Calvin, I brought my the desktop to modernopc in SS15 for them to try and fit a suitable cpu cooler…
Getting there took a fair bit of effort due the jam and accursed 1 way traffic, the lack of parking forced us to lug the desktop approximately 10 mins from the car to the shop.
Once we got in there things started to look up as they were started popping the side panel open and taking measurements… This was followed by some recommendations and trial fittings!!! Unfortunately, the coolers I had shortlisted in my previous post, either didn’t fit or were not available… After a few attempts with other coolers from Xigmatek, Artic Cool and Cooler Master, I finally settled on the Hyper N520 cpu cooler… Now here’s what wrong after that…
- They dropped my graphics card…
- They installed the cooler the other way around (therefore the the airflow was in the opposite direction)…
- They had to redo the installation of the cooler again and therefore remove the motherboard and redo the cable management again…
- They forgot to reconnect the front fan
- They had to redo the cable management again as themolex connector for the front fan was secured to the other side of the casing via cable tie
But all that aside, everything is running fine now… and I got a significant discount… Here’s a pic of everything running…
Looks damn neat hor???
By the way if you are interested, a review of the cpu cooler is available here…
