Prototype: Pure Genius Or Piece Of Crap???
Prototype… Honestly I didn’t even know anything about the game until the day before I bought it…
So it would be safe to say that I have been shielded from all the hype the game generated in the various forums and websites… The only reasons why I picked up the game was that it was of the free roam genre and that the 360 has been seriously neglected for the past few months…
After a few hours into the game it is apparent that the designers/programmers had played Crackdown and Assassins creed as there are subtle hints of both games littered around… For instance, you know how Altair shifts his weight and pushes people to the side when he walks into a crowd of people, well Alex does that as well…
You remember orb hunting in Crackdown??? Well that’s in this game as well…
There are many more of such touches but I will leave it at that and let you discover the rest at your leisure…
Prototype has thrown in an interesting way to approach certain objectives in the game by giving you the choice of taking a stealthy approach vs the kill em all route… The way the game lets you use stealth is to consume any npc (yes any) and morph into that said person… To avoid this from becoming repetitive, they have combined this mechanic with the web of intrigue element which allows you to navigate the memories of the “key npc’s” that you have consumed…
While some may argue that all it is an over-glorified movie theatre, it does lend some novelty to the game as it is interesting to see how everyone ties in with one another…
The missions tend to get repetitive after a while and thankfully, some welcome distractions have been put into the game in the form of “events”…
Events not only refresh the game but they are also a source of some hardcore exp points!!! And why are exp points important??? Well to upgrade your character of course!!!
Purchased upgrades are easily accessible via a little ring selector thingie which is simple enough to use even when the action is thick and fast…
Well after all that has been said above, I am sure you’re wondering if the game is a definite must buy… Well it does have rock solid controls, high enemy density, interesting mechanics/gimmicks and provides an adequate supply of enemies to slaughter… But gameplay gets repetitive and the game doesn’t do anything that previous games haven’t done already…
Even with all of its shortcomings and repetitive gameplay, I would say that the game is still worth getting as it is easily one of the most playable games to be released in the past few months…
