A brown envelope arrived via EMS the other day... Ripped it open...
My Windows Vista Home Premium (Express Update Pack) had arrived!!! YAY!!!
But before I could upgrade to vista, I had to backup all my files (and Jeanie's) to the home desktop.. and damn that was a pain... For starters, my laptop couldn't connect to the network share... why??? dunno why but it jusy wouldn't... So i ran the network setup wizard found in Windows XP Home on both computers to get them to see each other but, that still didn't work... the workgroup was the same... the necessary settings were done in the router but still, no go... setting up a new share location didn't work either... after some fiddling and banging my head on the table, I called Marauderz and relayed my tale of woe... to which he replied...
"Dude, XP Home??? You're screwed-lah"
So after running the damn network setup wizard a dozen or so times, it decides to work... hooray!!! back on track... or so I thought... backing up the 65 gb of files took a LOOOOOG time!!! And when I say a LOOOOOG time, I mean a LOOOONG time...
After the backups were done, I popped in the DVD with all the vista drivers to prepare the lappie for the vista install... first the dvd drive firmware was flashed... then the bios... then incompatible 3rd party programs were removed... the display and sound drivers followed soon after... after the machine was prepped, I started the vista install, which was going fine until...
IT REFUSED TO INSTALL BECAUSE MY FILE SYSTEM WAS FAT32!!! CRAP!!!
So I converted to NTFS and things were moving along until...
THE LAPPIE WENT INTO A BSOD LOOP!!! CRAP!!!
The BSOD loop was caused by sptd.sys (a component of a virtual drive program)... and no matter what I did (the repair install feature built into the vista dvd didn't work either), the BSOD loop continued...
Only one thing left to do then... Reformat and do a fresh install!!!
After the reformat and fresh install, I had to pop in the dvd with the vista drivers again to make sure all the components work fine... and thankfully nothing went wrong from that point and left me with something looking like this...

It may have taken hours... but it was worth it... Have you been wow-ed yet???
